The dog that cares about cats

Please, welcome the most caring German shepherd, Tyson. He has been living in a shelter called “Good Hands” for already three years. He got there when he was only nine months old. Why? His owners, apparently, considered him a burden, because the puppy was suffering from dysplasia of hip joints. He barely moves his hind legs and has his front legs also deformed.

Tyson lives in a boiler room, where there are cages with kittens and puppies because there isn’t enough room for them in the hospital and quarantine. Tyson shares his bed with another elder big dog. He comforts baby puppies who whine in cages, not understanding what is happening after having been taken from the street.

Tyson is a large male German shepherd dog, however, he is very gentle even with cats and kittens. The shelter has a special department – a kindergarten and a nursery for kittens that have just arrived and are still very small to live in a room for adult cats. Tyson visits the “kindergarten” whenever he has the opportunity.

Cats always lack affection and attention, so Tyson became their nurse! He sits with them, sometimes licks them and plays with them. Cats enjoy his company and aren’t afraid of such a giant. Tyson is also very friendly to people; he doesn’t hold a grudge; he is kind and helps the weak since he had also been in their shoes.

What is dysplasia?

It is a hereditary disease, even though not only genetics can cause its development. It can also be caused by poor nutrition, poor load distribution during training, negligence of the dog’s condition. This disease makes big dogs suffer a lot during their development and growth. The problem is that the disease can progress very quickly, so if you don’t treat the animal, it will be in a great deal of pain later.

It is important to understand that large breeds (most often German shepherds) suffer from dysplasia because the puppies eat a lot and grow quickly since birth. The increase in mass may lag behind the overall development of the bones. Insufficient nutrition or its excess can cause irreparable damage to the hip joints. Here, you need to take into account different factors: stress or a lack of vitamin C can also lead to dysplasia. As you can see, there are many reasons, but they can be avoided if you take care of your pet responsibly!

How to help a dog with such problem

There are two ways: therapeutic and surgical. In the first case, doctors prescribe drugs that restore the cartilage tissue, restrict the dog in physical exertion, develop a suitable diet, include vitamins and other useful elements in its ration. If the dog has problems with excess weight, even more attention is paid to the diet. The therapeutic method works very well with mild dysplasia.

When the disease is severe, surgical treatment can be helpful. The procedure is called resection arthroplasty, but it can only be done if the dog weighs less than 65 lbs and has a femoral head flattening. Surgeons change the angle of the articular cavity of the pelvic bone, which saves the dog from the problems.
