The Duchess of York and the Princess of Wales were in very close relations with each other. During the interview with the Harper’s Bazaar in 2007, Sarah Ferguson said:

We were fourth cousins, and our mothers, who went to school together, were also best friends.

Moreover, Diana was the one who set up Fergie with Prince Andrew. They met each other when Diana invited Fergie to the party at Windsor Castle, held after the Ascot Races back in 1985.

They also had a special nickname for their friendship. As written in the book Diana. Lonely Princess by Russian author Dmitriy Medvedev, Princess Diana and Sarah Ferguson called themselves “the merry wives of Windsor.”

Unfortunately, they didn’t talk to each other for quite a long time before Diana’s death. Nevertheless, during the interview with Harper’s Bazaar, Sarah Ferguson said that Diana was looking for her the day before she died, and wanted to talk about something:

I really miss Diana. I loved her so much. Diana was one of the quickest wits I knew; nobody made me laugh like her. But because we were like siblings—actually, we were fourth cousins and our mothers, who went to school together, were also best friends—we rowed. And the saddest thing, at the end, we hadn’t spoken for a year, though I never knew the reason, except that once Diana got something in her head….I tried, wrote letters, thinking whatever happened didn’t matter, let’s sort it out. And I knew she’d come back. In fact, the day before she died she rang a friend of mine and said, ‘Where’s that Red? I want to talk to her.
