‘The View’ Host Barbara Walters Opens Up About “A Lonely Isolated Childhood” With Her Mentally Disabled Sister

In her memoir Audition, Walters shed light on different aspects of her life. The main focus was made on her family and childhood.
Disabled sister
Barbra has two sisters. Her late sister Jackie was mentally disabled, which affected the girl’s childhood a lot. Jackie’s condition had a spillover effect on Barbara, as she told in an interview with The New York Times.
Barbra said:
It was a lonely, isolated childhood.

Jackie’s early death was another tough experience for Barbara. To some extent, her sister’s demise inspired Walters to write the memoir.

Biggest regret
In an interview with Bill Geddie on ABC News special, Barbara opened up about one of her biggest regrets in life. Walters said she was so busy with her work and career that, at some point, she totally forgot about her family.
She said:
I was so busy with a career… And, you know, on your deathbed, are you going to say, ‘I wish I spent more time in the office?’ No. You’ll say, ‘I wish I spent more time with my family.’
