Matthew Knowles thought his future wife Tina was white
Matthew Knowles grew up in the deep South. In an interview with Ebony magazine, he discussed having to face racism and colorism in his youth. He recalled one of such moments from his years at Fisk, which is a historically black university. Knowles said:
I was in the last class where they’d take out a brown paper bag, and if you were darker than the bag, you could not get into Fisk.
He also quoted his mother as saying:
Don’t ever bring no nappy-head Black girl to my house.

Knowles’ experience with colorism instilled in him something he described as “eroticized rage.” Sounds Freudian, right? Because it is.
Speaking about his new book, Knowles mentioned that it contains parts describing this concept. He even admitted that he was attracted to his future wife Tina because he thought she was white. He told Ebony:
I have a chapter in the book that talks about eroticized rage. I talk about going to therapy and sharing – one day I had a breakthrough – that I used to date mainly White women or very high-complexion Black women that looked White. I actually thought when I met Tina, my former wife, that she was White. Later I found out that she wasn’t, and she was, actually, very much in-tune with her Blackness.
I had been conditioned from childhood. With eroticized rage, there was actual rage in me as a Black man, and I saw the White female as a way, subconsciously, of getting even or getting back. There are a lot of Black men of my era that are not aware of this thing.
What an interesting way to frame it! We’d like to know, was Tina aware of it?

Tina probably doesn’t mind her husband’s revelation. Now that their relationship is over, it doesn’t really matter. What matters is that Matthew and Tina are parents of two famous and accomplished women, and their daughters’ success is, in no small part, their achievement, too!
