The baby’s development at 20 weeks
At 20 weeks, the baby is about the size of a banana, weighing about 10 ounces and measuring 6 to 6.5 inches from crown to rump. A lot of changes happen in the baby’s body at this stage. According to Medical News Today, these include the following:
- The baby’s brain is developing rapidly.
- The baby’s bones continue to harden and the bone marrow starts to produce blood cells.
- The baby’s genitals continue to develop – in boys, the testicles descend; in girls, the uterus and ovaries are formed and eggs continue to form.
- The baby’s arms and legs become more proportionate to his or her body.
- Somewhere around this time, the baby learns to swallow.
The baby also starts to move more and the mom starts to feel more kicks.
How does the mom feel at 20 weeks and what should she do?
During week 20 of pregnancy, many women get unusual food cravings (although some women get them earlier or later). This is a normal pregnancy symptom and is most likely related to changing hormone levels.

Other symptoms pregnant women tend to get at this point in pregnancy include the following, according to HealthLine:
- body aches;
- stretch marks;
- skin pigmentation;
- Braxton-Hicks contractions, also known as false labor.
Week 20 (or 1 to 2 weeks earlier) is the time when most pregnant women have their second ultrasound scan. It’s also the time for prenatal screening tests to check if the baby has any congenital abnormalities or inherited disorders; ask your doctor if you need any of these.
Speaking about your personal comfort, week twenty is also a good time to slip into maternity clothes, as your regular clothes are starting to get too tight.
You should call your doctor right away if you develop the following symptoms, according to Medical News Today:
- vaginal bleeding or other fluid coming out of your vagina;
- passage of tissue;
- feeling faint or dizzy;
- low blood pressure;
- rectal pressure;
- severe pelvic pain or cramping.
