At the age of 13, Winton lost his father, Gary, who passed away on the day of his bar mitzvah. Dale’s, mother, Sheree, a glamorous actress who once appeared in one of the James Bond films, was left to raise him on her own.

Just a few days after Winton’s 21st birthday, Sheree took her own life, leaving Dale orphaned.
The TV host opened up about his childhood pain two years ago, blaming his mother’s death on depression with which he had been battling himself. He revealed on a British panel show Loose Women:
I always thought, ‘Get over yourself’. But my mum died of it. It exists and anybody out there who has had it knows it exists. I should have taken myself off the TV but I didn’t. Listen, there are worse things in the world – but I had depression and I didn’t realise.
Previously Dale credited Sheree for his success, saying she had an impressive work ethic, which he inherited. But despite admiring his mother, Winton kept a big part of his life in a secret from her – his sexuality, which caused him to leave the home.

He even had a TV wedding with model Nell McAndrew when they said “I do” in front of the press and star-studded audience, who were kept in the dark whether it was a real love affair or not.

Winton never told his mother the truth and came out as gay only at 47 years old.
If I have a regret, it’s actually that I never sat… although she knew, I… I’m sorry that I never gave her the benefit of that trust. I kind of wished I had, because she died not long after.
