A fall that changed Bill Pullman’s life forever

Bill Pullman was very into theatre when he was in college. Once, during a rehearsal, the future movie star fell from 15 feet and slipped into a coma for a little over two days.

Bill was 21 at the time and, luckily, managed to recover, but he carries one of the ‘scars’ with him till this day. It turned out that Pullman’s head injury caused him to lose his sense of smell. The actor hoped to find treatment, but nothing ever worked out.

He said:

I’ve tried different things to get it back, but it’s not really possible. I think it actually inspired me with the fruit: the taste of tree-ripened fruit is so pungent. It heightened my sense of taste, probably.

Pullman’s lost sense of smell doesn’t keep him from doing his job, you can say he got away with minimal damage, but he admits that he misses it. At least he still has his taste, although it’s affected by not being able to smell food.

A lost sense of smell is commonly referred to as anosmia. It defines both the temporary loss of smell from a cold, as well as a permanent one that occurs due to brain injury.
