Archie's Godparents: Prince Harry's Pick Was His Way Of Paying Tribute To His Childhood

We now know who Prince Harry and Meghan Markle trusted enough to name as godparents to their son, Archie. And it’s a significant pick indeed!

Archie’s christening

In July 2019, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex shared the first pictures taken at Archie Harrison’s christening. It showed members of the royal family including the Cambridges, Prince Charles, and Duchess Camilla in attendance.

The then two-month-old was all snuggled up in his mother’s arms while Harry sat protectively by his wife’s side.

As this confirmed the child’s christening, royal fans have been curious to know who the couple named as their son’s godparents. There have been a lot of guesses since then, but, as it was typical of Harry and Meghan to protect their son’s privacy, they didn’t reveal the godparents’ identities to the world. Until now.

Archie’s godparents

The Sunday Times has published the names of the people Prince Harry and Meghan Markle chose to be their child’s godparents.

The publication’s royal correspondent, Roya Nikkhah, confirmed that at least three people – Tiggy Pettifer, Mark Dyer, and Charlie van Straubenzee – are the couple’s picks.

Based on these choices, it’s pretty clear that Prince Harry wanted to pay homage to those who were there for him in his childhood. Tiggy was actually Prince William and Prince Harry’s nanny when they were little boys. She was also one of the people who were there for them after the death of Princess Diana.

Prince Harry was a child when his and Mark Dyer’s paths crossed as well. Dyer was described as "a former equerry" to Prince Charles and as the boys were growing up, he maintained a close friendship to the royal brothers.

Charlie van Straubenzee is one of Harry’s childhood friends and they remain connected to date so it made sense that this was one of the Duke’s choices.

Archie’s cousins’ godparents

Prince William and Kate Middleton didn’t leave fans wondering too long about their children’s godparents.

  • Prince George: Ahead of his christening in 2013, Will and Kate’s first son’s godparents were revealed to be Zara Tindall, Emilia Jardine-Paterson, Earl Grosvenor, Oliver Baker, Jamie Lowther-Pinkerton, Julia Samuel, and William van Cutsem.
  • Princess Charlotte: No members of the royal family made the list of Prince William’s daughter’s godparents. However, the Cambridges did pay tribute to the late Princess Diana by naming one of her nieces, Hon Laura Fellowes as a godmother. Other picks include Adam Middleton, Thomas van Straubenzee, Sophie Carter, and James Meade.
  • Prince Louis: About two months after he was born, Will and Kate shared that their youngest child’s godparents would be Harry Aubrey-Fletcher, Nicholas van Cutsem, Guy Pelly, Lady Laura Meade, Hannah Carter, and Lucy Middleton.

Prince Harry and Prince William’s choices for their children’s godparents are quite telling. William and Kate endeavored to embrace people from both sides of the family and even found a way to honor the late Princess of Wales.

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle appeared to have made a more personal choice. Harry obviously wanted to name those who made a big impact on his life. He chose to honor loved ones that have been there for him since childhood and have a connection to his late mother. It’s actually quite sweet of him.
