"You're Still You": Christopher Reeve Wanted His Wife To Leave Him After The Tragic Accident But She Never Quit

Christopher Reeve was an American actor who became famous for his role as Superman, but his life was full of obstacles that were hard to overcome even for Superman.

In 1995, Christopher Reeve suffered a head fall in a horse-riding accident and got paralyzed from the neck down. He had received multiple fractures to his first and second cervical vertebrae which distorted his spine from the brain. And even lost his ability to speak. Christopher Reeve was inches away from death.

Christopher Reeve’s injury

Star of the Superman franchise was an avid equestrian. During a tournament in Culpeper, Va, his horse tossed him off the course while jumping 3rd out of 18 obstacles.

Reeve’s hand got stuck in the reins and he was pushed along. The medic arrived within 3 minutes and he was transferred to the University of Virginia Medical Center. The doctors couldn’t estimate the extent of the damage right away.

Christopher Reeve’s wife Dana was his angel

The world has known that with a great romance; love and tragedy often go hand-in-hand. Christopher and Dana’s story is the one that grew stronger out of pure sorrow.

The actor lost every shot at normality and overwhelmed by grief considered euthanasia. He asked his beloved wife to let him go. As recorded on 20/20 show, Christopher recalled that tears filled in her eyes as she rejected his will and said:

I want you to know that I’ll be with you for the long haul, no matter what. You’re still you. And I love you.

Dana Reeves constantly reminded her husband that when you love someone, there is no head injury, no brain damage. She was attached to the essence of him and that is why it was impossible for her to give up on him.

After that, their days became more valuable than ever. Overtime, Reeve developed a sense of undying hope and purpose. Together, they found a charity to support patients of similar mishaps.

She couldn’t survive without him

In 2004, the handsome hunk of Hollywood passed away after catching sepsis at age 52. Dana who was a non-smoker died of lung cancer two years later. She was 44.

Christopher and Dana will be remembered for the difference they made following their painful ordeal. They vowed to be there for each other in health and sickness and proved they were not just words. Their wonderful love story proves that true love can overcome everything. Do you agree?
