Humphrey Bogart and Ingrid Bergman were not the director’s first choice for the main roles. Initially, the leading male role was suggested to Ronald Reagan. And the role of Ilsa was supposed to be given to the actress Michelle Morgan. But Morgan made a condition to get no less than $ 55,000 for the part, and a producer decided to give the role to Ingrid Bergman who agreed for a smaller sum.

Humphrey Bogart had to wear platform shoes to compensate a lack of height. The matter is that Bogart was two inches shorter than Ingrid and he had to wear platform shoes or stand on boxes during their scenes.
