"She’s My Super Woman." How Shemar Moore Helps His Mom In Her Battle With Multiple Sclerosis

Did you know that multiple sclerosis is actually the most common immune-mediated disorder that affects your central nervous system? The name refers to the numerous scars that replace the white matter of your spinal cord and brain. As there is no cure for the disease, people with this condition have to undergo special therapies and take medications with side effects. Shemar Moore’s mother is one of such people, who continues her battle with multiple sclerosis.

The diagnosis
The Criminal Minds star shares the story of his mother’s disease, who was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis back in 1999. Shemar, 48, admits he couldn’t believe it:
I went through the whole denial thing for a couple of years. I was like, ‘Take a couple aspirin and go to sleep…You’ll be fine. You’ll be fine. Go get a massage and slow down.’
The debilitating disease drained the life out of Marilyn Wilson, and the son couldn’t leave it unnoticed. Shemar finally realized it was he, the only-child, who needed to help his mother:
She’s my Super Woman. It’s hard to see someone that you put on such a pedestal crack. She’ll never be broken, because she’s just way too strong-willed and hard-headed. But she’s human. She has her down days.

Almost 20 years later still staying strong
Marilyn is now 74 years old, and though the family thought she’d be wheelchaired by now, the woman still dances a little bit in her kitchen, goes out with friends to the beach, to a play, or a dinner. In other words, with the right mentality, the disease affects her only partially. Marilyn manages to live her life full despite having the devastating condition.
Shemar tries to raise awareness about multiple sclerosis, and he does it pretty successfully. The actor has raised significant money through his own clothing line called “Baby Girl” and participates in Bike MS: Coastal Challenge every year. He also had his mother move from San Francisco to Los Angeles to have an opportunity not just to spend more time with her, but also to help her anytime she needs it. Shemar is absolutely devoted to his mother and is always there for her:
She drives me crazy and she’s a pain in my ass, but she’s my mother and I wouldn’t have the life I have without her and how strong she was to give me the life that I have. My love for my mom is real and I want her to beat this damn thing. She’s my Super Woman and she needs to know that someone is out there fighting for her at all times.

Early symptoms of multiple sclerosis
Most common signs of multiple sclerosis are autonomic, visual, motor, and sensory issue, but a person with the disorder can have almost any neurological symptoms depending on the location of the lesions (scars).
The common signs of early multiple sclerosis may include the following:
- changes in sensation: pins and needles, tingling, numbness, etc.;
- muscle weakness and fatigue;
- blurred vision and double vision;
- muscle spasms and difficulty in moving;
- problems with balance and coordination;
- problems with swallowing and speech;
- bowel and bladder difficulties.

Often people with multiple sclerosis can have troubles emotions and thinking, resulting in depression, anxiety, frequent mood changes, etc. Multiple sclerosis is a tough disease, but it doesn’t mean you have to die. Finding positivity and confidence is key! Shemar sure helps his mother with that.
