James Dean Lost His Mom To Cancer At The Age Of 9 And Was Abandoned By His Dad Not Long After

James Dean’s parents were not a part of his life when he was growing up. But somehow, he managed to become a successful actor.

James was very well known for his movies but he received major props for his role as troubled teenager Jim Stark in the film Rebel Without a Cause, released in 1955. His talents were also praised when he played Cal Trask in East of Eden, and Jett Rink in Giant.

He achieved a major feat after his death as he reportedly became the first actor to receive a posthumous Academy Award nomination.

James Dean’s childhood

This legendary actor had a troubled childhood. In his biography, it was written that his mother became ill and passed away due to cancer when he was nine years old. His father then made him move to Indiana to live with his aunt and uncle.

While there, he pursued his love of the arts and he went on to excel in debate and drama.

Darwin Porter, author of James Dean – Tomorrow Never Comes, told the UK Express that James became a sort of Hollywood rebel as he was building his career.

James Dean’s mother’s death and his father’s subsequent abandonment had a major impact on his life.

He was barely nine when his mother died and his father was disinterested. That little-boy-lost look and his vulnerability became his key to stardom. He was difficult, selfish and insecure…

James was linked to several Hollywood starlets including Marilyn Monroe, Elizabeth Taylor, and Judy Garland.

Porter stated that despite James’ success as an actor, he continued to be a "tormented soul" as he could never move past his "inner demons."

He’d be up one minute, down the next. He was uncomfortable in his own skin.

James Dean and his father were not able to rebuild their relationship as his dad disapproved of James’ career choice.

As he attained success, the actor became interested in cars and car races which ultimately ended his life.

James Dean’s death

In 1955, the actor passed away at the age of 24. He was killed in a car crash when the Porsche he was driving hit another vehicle at an intersection.

According to History, only one of James’ movies, East of Eden, was released at the time of his death and shortly afterward, Rebel Without a Cause and Giant opened. He did have several minor roles in some TV series.

The young man was truly on his way to superstardom when he passed away so suddenly.

James Dean had a pretty difficult childhood, no doubt about that. He had to say goodbye to his parents at a young age and he tried his best to build a great career for himself. Even though things ended too soon, his iconic status is still well recognized and he’ll forever be a legend in the hearts of many.
