For some time, the ex-spouses couldn’t agree on how to proceed after the divorce. Diana started opening up to the press and to Elizabeth II’s displeasure even declared her expectations. Lady Di’s two priorities were unobstructed access to her own children and an ability to carry on with the work she had been doing within the royal family.

Keeping only the title of the Princess of Wales of all she had, Diana stayed in Kensington Palace with her children. The prince’s ex-wife reserved the right to use private planes, kept some of the jewelry she received as gifts during the marriage and an opportunity to participate in some family and public events. Also, she and Charles got equal custody of the children of minority age.

1. Emotional stability
The princess was restless in the last months of her life. She suspected being spied on and anticipated the impending assassination attempt. Lady Di couldn’t trust people seeing enemies even in personal bodyguards, especially given that she was protected by the police only at public events.

2. Charity work
As Charles’s wife, Diana patronized about 100 charitable organizations. After the divorce, she kept the right to work in the interests of only 6 of them, partially losing the meaning of life and parting with the dream of helping people.

3. Office and staff
Diana was able to retain the right to use the Kensington Palace office, but not the working office at St. James’s Palace. Also, her staff reduced from 10 to 3 people responsible for cleaning, cooking, and her wardrobe.
4. Friendship
For many years, Lady Di was friends with Elton John and Gianni Versace. She was even a co-author of several of their books, the work on which along with any communication terminated due to the notorious divorce. However, Elton John and Diana reconnected after Versace’s death.
5. Love
After the legal separation from her husband, the princess met the love of her life a heart surgeon from Pakistan, Hasnat Khan. Their relationship didn’t survive the trial by excessive public interest and the omnipresent media.
