Denzel Washington Advises Dillard University Graduates To "Put God First"

When people enroll in a college and invest three, four or more years in acquiring specialized knowledge, it is always to the intent that they become better people in the future. Asides fro job prospects and all, it is likely that one of their goals is to make a difference in the world.

That probably explains why most times, during that graduation ceremony, it is imperative that someone who has made a success of his or her own life shares some deep truth with the graduates.

Denzel Washington, the Academy Award-winning actor, had words of advice for the graduating students of Dillard University. In that speech, he gave them a few points that he said he believed brought him to where he was and would help them too.

1. Put God first.

It is no surprise that this was his first piece of advice to them seeing that has been his personal story. Beginning at a point where he had been flunking out of college and rising all the way to where he has gotten to, it is definitely evident God must have been in the mix.

In his words, he said:

Everything that I have is by the grace of God.

Noteworthy, however, is the fact that Denzel stressed that God should be “first” and not just one of the options.

2. Don’t be afraid to fail big.

Another very interesting point Denzel made to the graduates was that they shouldn’t be afraid to fail. In fact, he said they shouldn’t be afraid to fail big.

He even went on to add in quite an emphatic tone:

In other to achieve your goals, you must apply discipline and consistency.

3. Pray

In this world full of self, it is easy for people to become all self-driven and begin to believe that they could achieve their dreams all by themselves. But the star actor holds a largely different view as he tells the graduates to pray.

His speech to them can be surmised as put God first, act amidst fear and pray all the way.

Though it was a commencement speech and his audience was fresh graduates from college, these are truly practices anyone can put to work in their lives and see tremendous results.
