"Low blood sugar” is one of those terms we’ve all heard thrown around a bunch but probably don’t know much about.
Low blood sugar ( hypoglycemia ) is a condition that occurs when your blood sugar (glucose) is lower than normal, according to the National Institutes of Health. It may occur in people with diabetes who are taking insulin or certain other medicines to control their diabetes.

Other rare conditions, including hormone deficiencies, liver and kidney disorders, and pancreatic tumors, can cause hypoglycemia. Yet, low blood sugar can cause different symptoms for healthy adults as well!

So what does low blood sugar feel like?
Although the early warning signs tend to be non-specific, but if any of the following symptoms is concerning, check in with your doctor.

1. Feeling shaky or weak.
2. Fatigue.
3. Fast or pounding heartbeat
4. Double or blurry vision.

If not treated, you may then get other more serious symptoms, such as: seizures, collapsing or passing out or slurred speech.
Low blood sugar: what to do?
- Always have a source of fast-acting sugar with you as hypoglycemia is treated by giving a readily absorbed source of sugar, including soft drinks, juice, or foods containing sugar.

- If you have diabetes, always wear a medical alert bracelet or necklace. This helps emergency medical workers know you have diabetes.
- But for those who are healthy overall and just losing steam, it’s good to have something that provides a bit of carbohydrates to get your blood sugar up. Adding protein like an apple with peanut butter can also help stabilize your blood sugar levels.

- Eat your main meal (containing carbohydrate)
- Test your blood sugar after 10 to 15 minutes
If signs of low blood sugar do not improve after you have eaten a snack that contains sugar, have someone drive you to the emergency room or call your local emergency number.
