7 Scriptures That Show God Wants Us To Have A Long And Satisfying Life

When you search the internet today, you will find that there are a couple of life expectancy calculators. They promise to be able to predict how long a person will live by considering a few factors.

They look at your habits, eating, family history, work, exercise, education, income, and so on. And at the end of the exercise, you get a prediction of how old you are going to live.

Well, what does the Bible really say about living long? Are there scriptural indicators of how long a person will live? The following Proverbs and Psalms reveal the scriptural factors that affect life expectancy.

1. Proverbs 3:1-2

My son, do not forget my law, But let your heart keep my commands;

For length of days and long life And peace they will add to you.

There are believers who only think that the word of God is just a religious book for Christians. But a careful study of the word shows us otherwise.

The Bible is not another religious book. It is, in fact, the book of life.

According to Proverb 3:1-2, studying it is a recipe for a life of peace and ultimately lengthening of your days on earth. Thinking about it naturally, it makes sense because we know the effects that a life of worries can actually have on us.

2. Proverbs 3: 13, 16

Happy is the man who finds wisdom, And the man who gains understanding;

Length of days is in her right hand, In her left hand riches and honor.

Scientists agree that happier people tend to live longer than the sad ones. And that ties seamlessly into the message of this scripture. The wisdom being talked about here is the wisdom of God, and it is largely derived from the word of God.

So, what the word of the Lord is pointing out here is that the man who finds the wisdom in God’s word will live a happy life. In addition to bringing happiness into your life, the wisdom of God actually comes with a lengthening of days and riches and honor as well.

3. Psalm 34:12-13

Who is the man who desires life, And loves many days, that he may see good?

Keep your tongue from evil, And your lips from speaking deceit.

One of the universal laws of life is the law of cause and effect. It supposes that for every effect in life, there is a cause. In other words, things don’t just happen on their own, someone or something has got to make them happen.

Now, in order to make long life happen for you, the scripture reveals that a major recipe is to refrain your tongue from evil and your lips from speaking deceit.

That means when you stop speaking negative and vile words, you would have given yourself the opportunity to a longer and more satisfying life here on earth.

4. Proverbs 4:10

Hear, my son, and receive my sayings, And the years of your life will be many.

Very apt for people who love to argue or disagree with the word of God. People who love to hold opposing opinions to what God is saying or has said in His word should watch it.

Every time we receive the Lord’s saying, embrace them, and appropriate them in our lives, it’s like taking a long life pill in itself.

5. Psalm 91:16

I will give my followers a long life and show them my power to save.

Since prayer is about bringing your strong points before the Lord, this is a very powerful scripture for praying. Whether it is a terminal disease or any news of that matter that threatens to take your life, take this scripture with you in prayer and remind the Lord of His promises to you.

6. Proverbs 10:27

The fear of the LORD prolongs days, but the years of the wicked will be shortened.

The expression “Fear of the Lord” is one of the most misunderstood statements in the faith today, but it doesn’t have to be so. It simply refers to the reverence of Him.

So, what we are being told here is that the reverence of God actually has an impact on our days! And that is further reinforced by the second part of the scripture that tells us the years of the wicked will be shortened.

This explains why God was more than willing to Hezekiah in 2 Kings 20:1-6. His life of worship and reverence for the Lord was his ticket to his prolonged life.

7. Proverbs 28:16

A ruler who lacks understanding is a great oppressor, but he who hates covetousness will prolong his days.

One of the trends of the 21st century is that people are becoming more and more materialistic in their lives. Some have become so materialistic that they live beyond their means just to satisfy that desire.

It is no wonder why their health deteriorates as their credit card debts take a nose dive. If they only heeded the advice of the word of God here, not only would their days be prolonged, they would actually get to enjoy their days.

Living by these principles would be just enough to guarantee that you do not only live longer, but "spend your days in prosperity and your years in pleasure" (Job 36:11).
