As a rule, Olympic athletes’ stories are very interesting, as it’s not easy to reach the top of the world sport. In fact, to get to this level Olympic athletes must sacrify many things and overcome some real challenges. But the story of a Syrian girl named Yusra Mardini still stands out as most incredible.

20 years old, 1.65 meters tall, 53 kg – this delicate girl has a heart and courage worthy of a hero to be remembered for decades. Before swimming in the Olympic swimming pools and training in the best facilities in Germany, the young lady almost drowned in the Mediterranean Sea to save the lives of 19 refugees.

The war forced her to leave native Syria together with her sister. They were heading from Turkey to Greece in an overloaded boat as it began to take water. The sisters together with two other refugees swam with the boat in tow to shore in order to save the lives of the rest of the travelers.

When I was swimming for my life, I never imagined that I would get where I am now.

In Germany, along with her sister, the girl sadly but proudly remembers the long road to sporting success and world fame. They swam for three and a half hours in cold water, in the dark, among high waves.

I could not open my eyes, because they were full of salt water.

For Yusra, having saved the lives of her fellow refugees is the biggest swimming medal. Now, she represents a combined team of refugees of various nationalities in the Olympics.

Now, having grown both personally and professionally, Yusra’s dreams are more than clear, there are only three: peace for her country, open borders for refugees, and an Olympic medal. Be it as it may, this girl has already won 19 priceless medals.
