'I Can’t Wait To Honour You!': Michelle Obama Makes A Surprise Phone Call To 2018 'School Counselor Of The Year'
Former First Lady of the United States, Michelle Obama, made a phone call to the recipient of the 2018 School Counsellor of the Year Honour, Kirsten Perry.
Obama shared a video of the surprise moment on her Instagram page. She congratulated Perry on the victory and shared bigger news with her. Obama will be at the ceremony and would be the one to introduce the counselor.
It’s because of school counselors like Kirsten Perry that our young people dream a little bigger, and reach a little higher. Kirsten, I can’t wait to honor you and your colleagues from across the country at the School Counselor of the Year Ceremony next week. #ReachHigher
Perry was absolutely thrilled with the news. "Oh my God! This is amazing," she said.

In the caption of the video post, Obama had more glowing words for Perry. She said:
It’s because of school counselors like Kirsten Perry that our young people dream a little bigger, and reach a little higher. Kirsten, I can’t wait to honor you and your colleagues from across the country at the School Counselor of the Year Ceremony next week.

Kirsten Perry was named School Counselor of the Year by the American School Counselor Association (ASCA).
Obama offered her support to Perry as a part of her Reach Higher initiative. It is aimed at inspiring students to build better opportunity for their future by educating themselves past high school.
Obama encouraged young students to look into further studies whether at "a professional training program, a community college, or a four-year college or university."

According to a statement released by the ASCA, Perry, who works at the Lawndale Community Academy in Chicago, was honored because of her dedication to her students.
Perry has focused on improving student attendance, implementing restorative justice and providing college and career readiness.

A former student of the school, Kyla Evans, told the ASCA that Perry’s peace circles helped to reduce animosity among the female students in the school.
Ms Perry helped us to work on ourselves. We learned not to react to the small things and that if something was bothering us, we should talk it out. Ms Perry has done a lot to help us. She makes all the kids at Lawndale feel loved and like we can do anything we dream of.

The ACSA will host Perry and other finalists from January 31 to February 2, 2018, at a black-tie gala in Washington.

From the sound of it, Perry sure deserved that special honor. Counseling is a truly fantastic way to reach out to youths, and seeing someone go above and beyond like Perry does, is very admirable.
