US President Donald Trump appears to be making light of his own idea of buying Greenland from Denmark, tweeting a doctored photo of Trump Tower looming over a small village in the Arctic territory.

Why does Trump need Greenland?
Mr Trump on Sunday confirmed the idea of buying the semi-autonomous Danish territory had been discussed within his administration. The U.S. operates a military base on the island and previous administrations have tried to acquire it twice before, given its strategic importance in the North Atlantic.
"The concept came up and … strategically it’s interesting,"
Mr Trump told reporters in Morristown, New Jersey, as he prepared to board Air Force One.
"It is not No.1 on the burner, I can tell you that."
His recent joke
Now he has posted on Twitter a photo showing a doctored photo of a gleaming Trump Tower in the middle of a coastal fishing village joking:

But joke or not, the idea of buying the island — an autonomous Danish territory — has been met with a stern rebuke from Danish authorities and bemusement from Greenlanders.
Denmark’s Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen said Greenland was not for sale and the idea of selling it to the United States was absurd.
People’s reactions
Mr Trump’s son Eric, however, shared the same photo of a Trump Tower in Greenland on Instagram, saying:
"I don’t know about you guys but I love the concept of buying Greenland".
Twitter reacted in predictable fashion with a barrage of tweets and memes, some praising and some criticising the president.
