Usually, all attention in the delivery room is focused on the mom who’s giving birth. But for this couple, the doctors were worried about the expecting dad as well.

Did you know it’s possible for dads to experience similar pregnancy symptoms like bloating and nausea when their partner is expecting? According to Scientific American, this phenomenon is known as couvade (sympathetic pregnancy).

There have been several theories about what can cause this because even though it may sound odd, it’s something that actually happens in real life.

Ben Burgwin and fiance Amy Maddocks were excited to welcome their baby girl Amber. However, Ben didn’t even get to hold his newborn for the first five hours of her life because he had passed out, supposedly after experiencing sympathy pains while his wife was going through labor.

Amy had been in labor for over nine hours and it was as things were rounding up that Ben fainted in the delivery room. Before hitting the ground, he hit his head on a fan, then banged it on the edge of a cabinet moments before his daughter was born.

Ben told The Sun Online that he had to be taken away to get treatment and ensure that he hadn’t caused a major injury to himself.

I think they were worried about concussion or something more sinister, but it took a while to get me seen and sorted and back to Amy and Amber Rose. I felt like a right idiot.

Amy was relieved to hear that the father of her child was okay but she did plan to tease him about what happened for as long as possible.

I was worried he’d hurt himself to begin with, but once I knew he was OK, I told him he’ll never live it down

In fact, the mom said she planned to bring up the hilarious story on Amber’s 18th birthday.

We can certainly see why Amber’s birth is one moment the family won’t forget anytime soon, based on these unexpected circumstances. And we can only imagine how funny it would be when, years from now, Amy tells Amber the story of how her dad fainted on the day she was born.
