Zombie-Like Dog Was Taken Home For Its Final Days, But It Was Tougher Than Anyone Expected

Zombie-Like Dog Was Taken Home For Its Final Days, But It Was Tougher Than Anyone Expected

When we see pictures of animals in such a terrible condition, we ask ourselves: how can the world be so cruel to a living being? But, fortunately, there are people who do more than than just wonder.

Valia Orfanidou, a volunteer of an animal rescue organization in Greece, came across a Facebook post with photos of a dog that many considered fake. The dog looked like an extra on The Walking Dead – it was so skinny that one could see all the bones, and it almost had no hair.

These images touched Valia’s heart so much that she immediately knew she had to somehow help the poor animal. Even though judging from the photos the dog was close to death, she wanted to at least give it a home and comfort for its final days.

With the help of other volunteers, they found the dog, which they named Billy, and rushed it to a vet.

We were pretty sure we had taken him off the streets just to offer him the chance of a dignified death.

Everyone was convinced that the professional would insist on putting him to sleep. However, an examination concluded that Billy was stronger than he appeared and that he was ready to start treatment.

Valia temporarily took him home, where he spent the first couple of days in a small enclosed room since he had a highly contagious type of mange.

He must have been feeling so safe and secure in that small room that he slept for hours and hours. He would eat four times a day and then just go back to sleep. I felt like I had a tiny treasure to protect and nurture, and I checked on him a dozen times per day.

– Orfanidou wrote.

Two months later, he looked nothing like that miserable creature they took off the streets; Billy cheerfully played with Valia’s other pets.

The woman and the dog grew fond of each other, but one day, Valia received an email from Emma, a woman from Switzerland who was interested in adopting Billy. Although the thought of parting with her rescue saddened her, she knew this day would eventually come and Emma seemed to be a great candidate.

It was the right thing to do judging by how happy Billy was in his new home. Months after the adoption, Emma traveled to Greece and took Billy to visit his rescuer. Valia was thankful for many things, but above all, she was grateful to fate for giving her the opportunity to save this dog from imminent death.

This shows us how much we can do for helpless animals. Maybe not all of us can adopt them or even offer them a temporary home as Valia did, but there are many other ways to contribute. Here are some of them:

  1. Try to get the animal off the streets, because it faces many dangers there. If you can’t take it home, ask acquaintances if someone can take care of it for a while until you find it a new home. You can also contact animal rescue organizations for assistance.
  2. Take it to a veterinarian for examination. You can go to cheaper clinics that deal with street animals, and you can even launch a fundraiser to pay for the treatment. There are many people who are willing to donate to such causes.
  3. If you can’t help an animal directly, you can also make a donation to such organizations or fundraisers, or bring food to animal shelters.
  4. Finally, you can always contribute by spreading the word about animals in need of help to raise awareness, to prevent people from abandoning their pets, and to fight the indifference towards this problem.

Cases like Billy’s are really inspiring and show us how much we can do for an animal that was practically doomed. In this story, it was not only Billy’s life that was saved, but many other lives were changed for the better.
