Recently, a photograph of the marriage between an 11-year-old girl and a 41-year-old man has appeared on the internet sparking tremendous outrage from all over the world. The ceremony was conducted in secret.

The new husband of the minor, known as Che Abdul Karim, already has two more wives and six children between 5 and 18 years of age. And it was one of his other wives who reported about her husband’s despicable action.

Che Abdul Karim argues that his marriage to Masaryu Mat Rashid is permissible in Islam, even though it is against the law. Allegedly, the agreement with the parents was that the 11-year-old would continue to live with them until reaching 16.

According to the laws of Malaysia, the girls are allowed to get married only after 18. In some cases, with the prime minister’s permission, it is possible to reduce this age to 16. As for Islamic law, it establishes the minimum age for women to marry at 16.

The Malaysian government has launched an investigation, as they have no record of the ceremony. At the moment, it is suspected that the wedding could have been held in Thailand.

According to UNICEF, child marriage still remains a global problem, as at least 650 million females alive today have been married underage.

Between 2011 and 2016, there were over 9,000 child marriages recorded in Malaysia.
