This Picture Of American Teenagers Praying Just Before Prom Went Viral And Caused A Lot Of Outrage

A picture of students praying just before they went to prom sparked some outrage last week after a journalist at KTVU in California, Frank Somerville, shared it with his followers on Facebook.

Well-behaved teens?

The students were photographed at a local Longhorn Steakhouse and the picture was sent to Somerville by one of the students’ mothers.

Noelle Smith, mom of a teenager present in the photo, noted:

Now with the stories today about teenagers and tide pods and condoms gathering headlines — this picture speaks for itself.

She added that the students had said the grace before eating and praised them for being well-behaved.

Outrage online

However, the post did not sit well with a lot of people online who went on to question the assumption that the teenagers were moral or good because of their prayer. For the critics of the post, prayer did not necessarily mean that the teens had any integrity or character.

The picture was not without its supporters, particularly the sharer, Somerville, who thought the act of faith was ‘really nice to see‘. He noted that he was surprised by the outrage but completely in support of the honest conversation it had started.

Another prom teenager catches some flak

This follows another prom incident that brought conversations about racism to the fore after a teen used a racially inappropriate sign to ask a girl to prom.

The Florida teen, Noah Crowley, 18, held a sign that said:

If I was black, I’d be picking cotton, but I’m white so I’m picking u 4 prom.

And his prom date reacted to the disturbing sign, which she shared on Snapchat, with two heart-eye emojis.

Reactions online were followed by a statement from Riverview High School in Sarasota where Crowley attends. The school made it clear that they were not in support of the message. His parents also said he would neither attend the dance or graduation as a way for him to make amends.

The erring young man has since apologized.
