Rita Wilson Was Tom Hanks' Cure From Loneliness And Childhood Trauma

Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson’s marriage is one of the rarest stars shining on the Hollywood’s love sky. But for the ‘America’s dad’ his union meant more than anyone could have imagined.

Rita Wilson was a lifeboat for the actor from the loneliness and trauma he experienced in childhood. Hanks opened up about his past when talking to the BBC Radio 4 show Desert Island Discs.

Barely able to hold his emotions, the actor described what impact his music choice – Strauss’s Also Sprach Zarathustra – made on him as a teenager, after a tumultuous childhood with his father, Amos, changing 10 houses in 5 years and his mom who has been re-married 3 times. He said:

I started asking myself: ‘How do I find the vocabulary for what’s rattling around in my head?’

When the host asked him what those feelings were, Hanks replied after a long pause:

What it was, it was the vocabulary of loneliness.

The 61-year-old actor admitted that his first marriage at 21 to fellow actress Samantha Lewes, from which he has children Colin and Elizabeth, had been to ‘quell the loneliness’. But meeting his second wife Rita Wilson was the cure he was looking for.

I don’t think I’ll ever be lonely anymore, that’s how I felt when I met my wife.

It sounds surprising hearing these words from ‘Mr. Holywood’, the person dearly loved by many. But Rita Wilson, 61, loves him more than anyone.

On their 30th anniversary on April 30, Rita said of the man, who was by her side through her darkest times, including her 2015 breast cancer battle:

I prayed to God every day for years that he’d bring me somebody I loved who loved me in the same way. And He brought me Tom. I was so blown away by the care he gave me.

Hanks finally made peace with his past where he left the demons of his childhood to rest. Now he only looks in the future, firmly holding his wife’s hand.
