Mother's Tribute: 106-Year-Old Roberta McCain Says Goodbye To Her Loving Son, John McCain

On Friday, August 31, the late US Senator John McCain became the 31st person to lie in state at the US Capitol Rotunda. Before his death, he served two terms in Congress, and was a senator for over three decades.

Members of the US Congress attended the solemn event that began just before 11 a.m., despite the pouring rain. In the spirit of bipartisanship, politicians from both the Democratic and the Republican Party put aside their differences to honor their former colleague.

CNN reports that Senate Majority Leaders Mitch McConnell and Chuck Schumer, House Speaker Paul Ryan, and House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi all presented wreaths at the event.

Also in attendance at the Capitol was Roberta McCain, John McCain’s mother. The 106-year-old woman appeared alongside other members of the family. During the ceremony, cameras caught her holding hands with her granddaughter, Meghan McCain, while guests delivered speeches.

In the end, Roberta made the sign of the cross at her son’s casket before she was wheeled away. Roberta suffered a stroke that made speaking a problem for her, but still, she was able to join the rest of the family at the Capitol in a gesture of unflinching love.

Commentators on social media continue to pay their respects, and share words of encouragement with the McCain family, especially his mother.

Losing a child is always a traumatic experience. No parent looks forward to burying his or her children. We hope Roberta finds the strength to go on with her beloved family.
