Maggie Smith Married Her First Husband While Being Engaged To A Man, Who Eventually Became Her Second And Last Partner

Maggie Smith and her first husband, Robert Stephens, were married for eight years. During a not-so-long marriage, the couple was lucky to produce two sons, Chris Larkin and Toby. Both of them have followed in their parents’ footsteps to become famous actors in the UK.

The two separated in 1975 due to unknown reasons. What happened next?

Maggie Smith and her second husband

Maggie Smith’s husband, Beverley Cross, proposed to her when he was still married to his then-wife. Their love was so strong that the Harry Potter star promised the playwright to wait for him, even if it takes the entire life.

However, while she was waiting for him to divorce, Smith met her first husband and the father to her two sons, Robert Stephens.

In 1974, Maggie separated from her first spouse and married Beverley Cross shortly after the divorce in 1975. Though Maggie Smith and Beverley Cross’ love story was somewhat twisted and complicated, they managed to remain together for 23 years until his death in 1998.

During a candid interview way back in 2013, the British star was asked if she felt lonely after her second husband’s passing. She replied:

It seems a bit pointless, going on on one’s own and not having someone to share it with.

The happy couple didn’t have mutual children, but Cross proudly became the stepfather to his wife’s kids, Chris Larkin and Toby.

Maggie Smith was betrayed

Robert Stephens once admitted he had adulteries while being married to the Downton Abbey star.

I’ve been unfaithful numerous times. I honestly can’t remember how many. Maybe 20 times in each marriage. About three a year for each marriage.

In fact, he even didn’t plan to tell, but his dentist forced him to do so.

A long time ago, I was forced by a dentist friend to tell Maggie about my adulteries. He said, ‘If you don’t, I will’, so I had to tell her. Unfortunately, I’d had a slight romance with his receptionist who was also his mistress!

Anywise, Maggie Smith still waited for Beverly Cross, even though she married and had sons at the time. Her husband gave her blissful marriage for 23 years until death did them part.
