Ian McKellen Surprises The Graham Norton Show Audience With An Imitation Of Maggie Smith
Sir Ian McKellen was joined by Hugh Jackman and Sir Patrick Stewart to promote another installment of the X-Men franchise on the popular British talk show, The Graham Norton Show. During his time there, Sir Ian amused the audience with his hilariously accurate imitation of his dear friend Maggie Smith.
McKellen, a British cultural icon famously known by his theater works and big-screen roles of Gandalf in The Lord of the Rings trilogies and Magneto in the X-Men films, is a friend of Dame Maggie Smith, one of the most recognizable British actresses who is known for her roles of Dowager Countess of Grantham in drama series Downton Abbey and Professor McGonagall in Harry Potter films.
Their friendship has blossomed in 1995 on the set of the film adaptation of Richard III, and since then, they have been good pals who enjoy spending time together. Recently, Sir Ian confessed that he was offered the part of Professor Dumbledore in the Harry Potter films, which could have made two stars work together again.
And, only a good friend can be able to get away with an impression, like Sir Ian did on Dame Maggie on the show:
As the story goes, Sir Ian was attending the Academy Awards a couple of years ago when he was nominated for playing Gandalf. There, he ran into his dignified fellow Brit Maggie Smith on the red carpet. The actress didn’t seem particularly amused about McKellen’s choice to wear some New Zealand greenstone around his neck to bring him luck. Well, at least, we get hilarious impression out of it.
This wasn’t the first time he portrayed Maggie. McKellen also impersonated the British actress on an American late-night live TV show Saturday Night Live (SNL):
We have to admit, his acting talent is undeniable.
