Erica Garner, The Activist And Daughter Of Eric Garner, Has Passed Away At 27

The eldest daughter of Black Lives Matter’s icon Eric Garner and the passionate activist fighting for the police reform, Erica Garner, has passed away on Saturday, December 30, 2017. She was only 27 years old.

Fighting for justice

Erica Garner became an outspoken activist and fighter for the much-needed changes in the law enforcement system after the death of her father, Eric Garner. Back in 2014, the man was killed by an NYPD officer.

Since then, Erica became a fighter for justice and one of the leading figures of the national movement for police accountability.

A heart that was too big

Erica Garner suffered a major heart attack. According to her mother, Esaw Snipes-Garner, the cardiac arrest was caused by an earlier asthma attack, NY Daily News reported. The 27-year-old woman was taken to Woodhull Hospital in Brooklyn where the doctors decided to place her in a medically induced coma.

When talking to the media, the Rev. Al Sharpton said Erica died of natural causes. He also pointed out that her family did not remove the woman from the life support system, hoping she would be able to come out of the coma.

Later, it was discovered that Erica’s heart was enlarged, says NBC News. “Her heart was bigger than the world. It really really was,” her relatives wrote in a post on Twitter.

She will be missed

Following the sad news, people rushed to express their feelings and give their condolences to the Garner family on social media. Senator Bernie Sanders and the NYC Mayor Bill de Blasio were one of the first people to give their words of support to Erica’s family.

Many Twitter users also mentioned Erica in their posts, giving their condolences to her friends and family.

Earlier in August, Erica gave birth to a little son Eric, named after her father. The woman also had 8-year-old daughter Alyssa.

Our deepest condolences to Erica’s family and friends!
