Charlize Theron Bares Her Heart About Struggling With Depression

Charlize Theron did not have a lot to do in her first movie role. Sitting stony-faced in a church and being chased by monsters was far from exciting. But she has come a long way since 1995’s Children of the Corn III: Urban Harvest.

With two decades of acting and counting under her belt, Theron has shone her uncanny ability to take on a diverse range of roles with ease. From period pieces like the 1996 musical drama That Thing You Do! to box office hits like Hancock, her screen presence is undeniably strong.

Most people are more familiar with her more charming roles, and she does take advantage of her smoldering looks. However, her performance as serial killer Aileen Wuornos in Patty Jenkins’ Monster (2003) proved that Theron was limitless in her range.

Dealing with depression on Tully

42-year-old Theron recently ended another excruciating physical journey for her new film, Tully. Theron plays a mother of three who is gifted a nanny by her brother. To get into character, the actress had to put on 50 pounds. She discussed her preparation with ET’s Kevin Frazer on Tuesday.

I gained close to 50 pounds for this film. I just wanted to feel what this woman felt, and I think that was a way for me to get closer to her and get into that mindset.

While shooting was a worthwhile experience, Theron confessed that it was still a difficult time. It took her about three and a half months to put on weight. For the first time in a long while, she was constantly binging on processed food.

The result is that Theron suffered a mild bout of depression that to some extent affected her relations with cast and crew during shooting.

You know, it was a huge surprise to me. I got hit in the face pretty hard with depression. Yeah, for the first time in my life I was eating so much processed foods, and I drank way too much sugar. I was not that fun to be around on this film.

Losing the weight proved to be much harder than putting it on, Theron said. And it caused her a lot of worries. But, eventually, she was able to pull through and is feeling much better now.

Other celebrities who gained weight for roles

Renee Zellweger put on 30 pounds for Bridget Jones in both installments of the movie. And it was a pretty bumpy ride.

I had a panic attack, with all the specialists talking about how bad this is for you long-term, putting on that much weight in short periods of time.

For Eat Pray Love, Julia Roberts had to put on 10 pounds to fit into the role of Elizabeth Gilbert. It may not be as much as the author put on in real life (Elizabeth Gilbert put on 30 pounds), but it was still a challenge for Roberts.
