Going flat

All of her amazing nominations and wins got darkened by the battle with cancer, which she had to go through twice in her life –in 2003, she survived ovarian cancer, and in 2012, she overcame stage II breast cancer.

Bates had a double mastectomy and suffers from a condition called lymphedema that causes the swelling of arms and legs, which can happen after undergoing a cancer surgery.

The actress mentioned that her mother had had a radical mastectomy too, after which her arms swelled so much she couldn’t fit into her clothes. It left a horrifying mark on Kathy, and getting through the same thing made her feel frightened.

I remember getting hysterical when, even in the hospital, I noticed strange pains in my hands and then discovered that my arms were swelling.

Lymphedema can’t be cured, but Bates tries to keep it under control by having physical therapy, keeping her weight in check, eating less salty food, and staying away from alcohol.

She makes appearances on TV programs making people laugh.

Kathy jokes that she lost weight because she was called obese by the National Enquirer.

Having a good sense of humor and trying to stay positive helped the actress get through the hard times, and we can’t help but admire her for that.
