Cyndi Lauper’s family life growing up was far from the idyllic wholesome household that one might imagine.
Cyndi Lauper’s parents, Catrine and Fred, got divorced when she was five years old and her mother ended up remarrying. In her book titled Cyndi Lauper: A Memoir, the singer revealed some details of her childhood including the fact that she had to leave home when she was a teenager.
Catrine’s second husband was a predator who taunted Cyndi so badly that she didn’t feel safe at home. All that, however, became water under the bridge as the She Bop singer now relies on her mother for advice and guidance despite things being a little complicated.

Cyndi Lauper discusses mom’s dementia
In a 2016 interview with AARP The Magazine, the singer opened up about what it was like to have conversations with her mother.
Cyndi Lauper said Catrine had "a little dementia," and while this sure made things difficult, there were some upsides.
She lives in the present. The good thing is, I can talk to her and tell her stuff that I really shouldn’t tell anybody, and she’ll give me these wonderful words of wisdom that a mother does. But then, 10 minutes later she’ll forget.
In the interview, the 66-year-old star also revealed what it felt like to be getting older. One of the benefits, she said, was that she felt she could do whatever she wanted including playing with her hair color.
I think I have reached an age when I can have pink hair if I want – or blue hair. But blue, it turns a little green, so right now I am going with the pink.

Cyndi Lauper’s mom’s battle to keep her from going to hell
In an interview with the NY Post, Cyndi revealed that she was a rebellious kid which actually forced Catrine to do some drastic things to save her.
The singer revealed that she was thrown out of two catholic schools.
I think my mother thought we were gonna go to hell because she was divorced, so she put us in a convent school. She thought we were going to be saved, but the nuns . . . oh, they were angry. They had problems!
Cyndi has made a pretty impressive musical career for herself. But this doesn’t mean things have always been smooth. Like many people, she has some childhood challenges but these days, she’s embracing her life and looking at the positives. And it sounds like this is also the case regarding her mom’s dementia.
